Trunk Island Palmetto vs Surinam

Bermuda Palmetto (Sabal bermudana)

After the huge deforestation of the Bermuda Cedars on Trunk Island it was reforested by the Bermuda Palmetto and the Surinam Cherry tree. Although Trunk Island is relatively small the two trees have managed to occupy completely different locations and segregate themselves.

Surinam Cherry (Eugenia uniflora)

In conclusion, from our results, the cherry forest is comprised of smaller trees that are more tightly packed whereas the palmetto forest is coated with large trees that have decent spacing between themselves. The light intensity is drastically lower in the Cherry forest and this is mainly due to the fact that the leafy branches combined with the dense forest blocks out the vast majority of sunlight from reaching the ground. The pH of the forests don't differ that greatly so the tree's prefrence in geographic location does not contrast as much as one would think.
